Root Android 4 2 2 Jelly Bean XXUBMG1 for Samsung Galaxy S4 I9500 Exynos 5

XXUBMG1 Jelly Bean 4.2.2 custom ROM is now available for the Exynos 5 Octa model of Samsung Galaxy S4 I9500. If you have this version installed on your device, then you can easily use this tutorial and learn how to successfully root it without bricking the device.
This is a tutorial for advanced Android users and you shouldn’t attempt to try to root your device in case you don’t know what you’re doing. This update has been released via OTA or through Samsung KIES software. But, you can easily root it using Odin and a single .tar.md5 file that has to be flashed so that you’ll gain root access.
In order to be sure that you successfully root your Samsung Galaxy S4 I9500, you should first take a look at the guidelines below. Here’s what you need to know:

• this is a guide that will work only with the Samsung Galaxy S4 model number I9500, that’s the Exynos 5 Octa variant.
• do not attempt to use this tutorial with any other Galaxy S4 smartphone version, as you will end up bricking it.
• the SGS4 has to be factory unlocked.
• backup all the data that is stored on your device, as the tutorial might wipe every single data file.
• rooting your device will void the warranty. This can be restored only by installing a new official and stock Jelly Bean build.
• disable any antivirus application from running on your smartphone.
• disable Samsung KIES software, as this program will interfere with the rooting process and you cannot complete the tutorial.
• enable the USB Debugging option from the Developer Options section.
  > in case the Developer Options menu doesn’t appear, then it means that it is hidden and you have to enable it.
  > open the Settings menu, then scroll down to About Device, open it and then find the Build Number section. Click it 7 times and the Developer Options menu will be show up in Settings.
• make sure that you phone has enough power left before switching off completely.
• read this entire post before starting the root and make sure not to skip any instructions that I’ve listed.
• note that this is a guide for advanced users.
• you cannot held us responsible in case the phone gets bricked nor in case you lose any important data files.

How to root XXUBMG1 Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean firmware for Samsung Galaxy S4 I9500:

1. Download the root zip package from here.
   > save the file on your PC.
2. Now you need to extract its contents and place them in a single folder on your desktop screen.
3. Download Odin 3.07 from here.
   > extract the zip contents and place them on your PC.
4. Power off your Galaxy S4 completely.
5. Boot the device into Download Mode now. If you don’t know how to do it, then you can find this guide here helpful.
6. Launch Odin exe on your PC.
7. Now you need to connect the phone with your PC via USB cable.
   > wait for ODIN to say that the device has been ‘added!!’, then you can continue to the next step.
   > if the phone is not recognized, then you should reinstall the Samsung USB Drivers or you can choose to switch between USB Ports.
8. Go to ODIN and click on the PDA button.
9. Now you have to browse your computer for the .tar.md5 root file. Load it into ODIN.
   > do not change any other default settings in ODIN.
   > make sure that the Re-Partition option is not enabled.
10. Click the START button when every thing is set and ready for the root process.
11. After ODIN completes the root of XXUBMG1 Jelly Bean 4.2.2 firmware, you can see the ‘PASS’ alert displayed on your computer.
12. Unplug the phone from PC when the phone restarts. Wait for the normal boot to complete.
13. Enter your Google Account details if you’re asked to do it.
14. That’s it, you’ve successfully managed to root your smartphone and now you can being testing the new rooted ROM.
    > also, you can start installing new apps that require root and other customization files to improve your smartphone’s UI.

These were the steps that you had to take in order to root your device.
Since this new root file doesn’t install any Custom Recovery images, then you will need to install them using another method. You can download Goo Manager or ROM Manager to flash a TWRP or CWM Recovery directly from your device’s home screen.

NOTE 1: If ODIN freezes or it doesn’t complete the root, then you will need to unplug the device from PC and then you should repeat the entire tutorial once again. Make sure that you don’t skip any steps and ask for extra help by leaving a comment at the end of this post.
NOTE 2: If ODIN says that the root has ‘passed’, but the phone cannot get past the Samsung boot animation screen, then you will have to ‘factory reset’ the device. Here’s how to use the stock Recovery and factory reset the device in order to force it to boot into normal mode:

• power it off completely by removing its battery.
• re-insert the battery after 5 seconds have passed.
• boot your device into Recovery Mode.

• when you’re at the main Recovery screen, select ‘wipe data/ factory reset’ option.
• Confirm.
• select ‘reboot system now’ and wait for it to boot into normal mode.
• that should be it.
